In June 2023, I was hired as the Social Media and Outreach Intern for Legacy Philanthropy, a nonprofit organization that curates charitable events for professional athletes. Legacy has worked with high-profile clients like Houston Texans player Laremy Tunsil, organizing food drives, football camps, and initiatives such as shopping sprees for single mothers.
During my time at Legacy Philanthropy, I significantly enhanced the organization’s digital presence by transforming its Instagram feed into a more cohesive and engaging platform, increasing the follower count by 400 and nearing 1,000 total followers. Beyond social media, I played a crucial role in outreach, securing brand partnerships and sponsorships for various events. I proficiently wrote and distributed press releases to media outlets, ensuring coverage for our initiatives, and created persuasive pitch decks that effectively communicated event value propositions, helping drive successful collaborations.
A key part of my role involved managing brand partnerships with companies such as Lululemon, Smoothie King, Gel Blaster, Slate Milk, and Eos. I ensured that partner relations remained strong by overseeing all aspects of social media promotion, making sure that each brand received the exposure and engagement promised in our agreements. Whether it was crafting engaging content, coordinating sponsored posts, or ensuring proper logo placement in promotional materials, I worked diligently to maintain seamless collaboration between the brands and our nonprofit initiatives.
Additionally, I was actively involved in event planning and execution. From designing step-and-repeats to shooting and editing promotional videos when videographers were unavailable, I embraced a hands-on approach to making each event a success. I also handled logistical tasks such as coordinating catering, sourcing decorations, and assisting with on-site setup, often driving across Houston to gather supplies.
One of my most memorable experiences was assisting with Houston Rockets player Dillon Brooks’ 12 Days of Christmas charity initiative in 2023. One event involved bringing a group of foster girls to a Rockets game, where they had the chance to meet Dillon. The connections I built with some of the girls were so meaningful that we even became pen pals for a time.
Despite balancing graduate school and my role as a teaching assistant at USC, I continue to contribute to Legacy Philanthropy whenever they need me. This internship not only refined my skills in public relations, partner relations, and event management but also solidified my passion for working in the sports industry—specifically in athlete branding, crisis communication, and philanthropy.
